These very special (mostly older and special-needs) children have little chances of finding families, but they may become a blessing to those who would give them a chance.  To learn more about adopting one of these kids, please e-mail us at adopt@aboutachild.org.

David has been diagnosed with Spastic quadriparesis – diplegic form. He can walk with a walker and will also get down on the floor and crawl to get where he wants to go. He wears glasses to correct his vision. He has mild mental delays that are primarily a result of being raised in an orphanage. He talks and understands everything that is said to him. He memorizes songs and poems. He is descirbed as 'sociable and inquisitive'. He feeds himself and is very neat at meal time. He is attending school at the orphanage and is in the regular education classroom.

Kraig is 4 years old. He is considered blind as a result of an injury during birth and surgeons in his home country have determined that his eyes can not be repaired. He is sociable, especially with adults he knows. He walks holding on to one hand of an adult and around an immovable support. He will take several independent steps and it is very likely that the only reason he is not 100% independent with his walking is due to his hesitation to walk since he can not see where he is going. He shows interest in the surrounding environment and listens to its noises. He eats from a spoon and is learning to feed himself. He can get the spoon to his mouth, but is still learning how to scoop food onto the spoon while compensating for his lack of vision. He plays with toys. He babbles and says some syllables spontaneously. He interacts with adults. He follows verbal directions and will play games in which he has to follow verbal instructions (raise your hands, clap your hands, etc). He enjoys music. Several photos and a detailed video from April 2013 are available.

Vince was recently moved into foster care and has begun to make developmental progress since being in the care of his foster family. He stands and puts weight on his legs when placed in a walker. He will take steps when his hands are held by an adult. He eats very well and has a good appetite. He holds objects in his hands for long periods of times. He explores them by feeling them and moving them from hand to hand. He is easily overstimulated by too much noise for long periods of time. He claps his hands together and has begun to make sounds and attempt to repeat syllables. Photos, videos and medical report from August 2013 are available.

From her medical profile: Daisey has seen quite a few specialists in her short life in order to get an accurate diagnosis on her condition. Each specialist focused on a specific aspect of Daisey’s physical development and the results from all of the consults are: congenital malformations syndrome with predominant involvement of the facial area ,chest malformation with severe scoliosis, pes equinovarus bilateralis, arthrogriposis for the 4 limbs, overlapping long toes, limited flexure contractures for the 4 limbs, increased muscle tone, clubbed feet that are in the process of being corrected. Developmentally, Daisey is very alert and aware of what is going on around her and follows the movements of people and toys. She can stay in a sitting position with support. She is interested in toys and interacts with them. She eats from a spoon and drinks from a cup with adult assistance. She seeks out attention and reacts positively to interactions from adults. She recognizes her name and reacts to it. She looks at herself in the mirror.

This bright teenager with a radiant smile is healthy, athletic, social, optimistic and artistic. His very minor speech defect does not stop him from socializing with friends, playing sport, drawing or listening to music. His only 'disability' preventing him from being adopted in his home country is his age and possibly a darker skin color that many of his countrymen are biased against. We hope this special boy was waiting for so long so that he can find a very special forever family.

Being a teenager is difficult and scary. Being a teenager AND an orphan, having lost your family and six siblings, is a hundred times scarier. But Elvira is a fighter, and a survivor. She channels her energy through physical activity and keeps her spirit up by connecting with others and building friendships. She works hard to change herself to the better, both emotionally/behaviorally and academically, and despite all odds hopes that someone out there will want her for a daughter.

Any thirteen-year old would tell you it's hard being a teenager. For this artistic and sensitive girl, life is tenfold more complicated. She is lucky to live in a smaller, family-type home, where she gets an opportunity to express her creativity through choir, painting, even participating in national literary competitions (she won an award for her poem). She earns good results in school and her teachers report her diligence, responsibility and persistence in doing her homework. At the same time, she is emotionally fragile and needs someone who can be a good role model, help her learn better behavior and peer communication, someone to be there, guide and support her - now and forever.

This bright-eyed young man has only a few years left to find his forever family. He currently lives with a foster family in his home country and very much wants to be adopted. He is physically healthy and active, non-aggressive and communicative with others. However, it's difficult to grow up an orphan and be unscarred - this boy is behind his peers academically and emotionally and would need help in catching up. Although he is not diagnosed with ADHD specifically, his lack of focus and struggle for a structured environment may indicate a need for some medical intervention.

Alan is a smart, healthy boy with no developmental delays, no emotional problems, no physical disabilities. It is a testament to his orphanage staff and to his strong and optimistic personality that Alan was able to grow up such a wonderful young man. When he was available for domestic adoption, his skin color hindered a family search. Now that he is available for international adoption, we hope to find a family able to look beyond his skin color - and his age, and welcome him home.

Come meet a 'typical' orphanage pre-teen. He is friendly, sociable, and has a charming smile. However, even his medical report lists emotional and mental development corresponding to a child raised in an institution. He is physically healthy, but described as 'clumsy' since his orphanage's lack of athletic programs has given him no opportunities to enhance his motor skills. He is trying hard in school, but has fallen so behind academically that it is impossible to catch up in an institutional setting. As a result, he is labeled as 'mildly delayed. Everyone recognizes this boy has so much potential, but needs lots of individual attention, patience, and of course love, to help him realize it.

Allison is a sweet 12 year old girl who likes ice-cream and chocolate, riding a bike and playing with her friends. She has been raised in orphanages since she was 2 and while caretakers say Allison has adjusted to the orphanage life very well, it doesn't replace having a real family. It's no wonder Allison feels abandoned by her biological mother - not once, but twice: she came back for Allison's older sister and took her home, but not Allison. When being interviewed and taped by adoption officials, shy Allison opened up and admitted how much she'd like to have a family. She even drew a picture of her dream house with tulips all around it. While she loves playing with her peers, Allison is very loving and gentle with younger kids around her, and would make an excellent big sister. Could you be the family Allison dreams for at Christmas?

Growing up in institutions, Elisa got a slow start in life. She is physically healthy and not mentally delayed, but falling behind academically and emotionally. Her foster mother - a grandmother, actually, loves her dearly, but is not able to offer additional resources that Elisa needs to catch up to her peers. While separation from her 'baba' would be hard on Elisa, the strong bond she has developed foster grandmother is a good indicator the girl is capable of attachment and love. Now she is only waiting for someone to see her as a diamond in the rough and help her shine!

This sunny boy with Down Syndrome desperately seeks personal attention from adults and can't wait for a family of his own. He loves playing and walking outside, has some minimal self-service skills, and despite severe developmental delays brings joy wherever he goes. Those who met him describe him as a sociable, joyful and well-intentioned boy, who expresses his feelings freely and maintains very good eye contact. The child is capable of bonding and he loves cuddling and hugs. He seeks interactions with both adults and children. Emmitt is hard-working and does relatively well academically. Like many other boys his age he prefers sport and music to grammar lessons, but tries to keep up his grades nevertheless. Emmitt is genuinely attached to his foster family, but they aren't considering adoption. Kids like Vincent can be found in any American school - friendly, engaging, smart but more interested in sports and team games than academics, misbehaving from time to time. This boy with a heart-melting smile has been waiting for his family since birth. A healthy kid, he wasn't adopted as a baby because of his skin color. By the time his country opened up to international adoptions, Easton outgrew an adorable toddler stage and was once again unfairly overlooked. With only a few years left before he ages out, we hope someone notices this 'average' kid who is trying so hard to stand out from the crowd. Easton is described to have normal development and intelligence, but of course would need some help catching up academically. He lacks leadership skills and self-confidence, especially when dealing with adults. He needs someone to teach him what it means to be a family and to tell him how special he really is.

What a difference just a couple months out of the orphanage make in a child's life! When 6-year old Abigail was transferred from regular orphanage into a foster home like environment she immediately progressed enough to start a regular mainstream kindergarten. She is still diagnosed with microcephaly, physical, motor and speech delays, and intermittent heterotrophy (crossed eye), but her potential is amazing and with the right therapies she has a chance to catch up to her peers. Most importantly, Abigail has no attachment issues and has bonded well with her new caretakers, forming a special relationship with one particular nanny. Amelia was born in March 2012 and did not enter the orphanage until she was 15 months old. She has Cerebral Palsy, cleft hard and soft palate(surgically corrected), developmental delays, atrophy of the optic nerve, convergent concomitant strabismus, and microcephaly. It is also noted that one leg is shorter than the other, and she has spasticity in her feet. She has high tone in all of her limbs, but can bear weight on her legs with support and hold her head up while in an upright position for a minute before tiring. She can turn from back to belly and scoot herself to get around some. She regressed in development after spending time in the hospital at 2 years of age due to lack of interaction. She is generally in a good mood and shows her emotions through expressive facial expressions. She is interested in things going on around her and watches the other children. She takes 2 naps during the day and spends much of her awake time in the playroom. Amelia differentiates between adults she knows and those that she does not, and is cautious with those she does not know. She accepts jests and enjoys them. She is interested in toys, trying to grab them and examine them but lacks the ability to do so effectively. She attempts to follow verbal instruction and perform simple movements with pointing at things. She makes noises but cannot speak words. Amelia is fed by spoon, slowly, and has some favored foods. She is accepting of the care she receives from her caregivers willingly (bathing, changing, etc). This girl seems to have a lot of potential for improvement with interaction and therapy! What a joy she would be to a family.

This adorable little boy had a rough start in life due to his congenital heart defect (congenial cardiac malformation, interatrial defect type II, pulmonary stenosis), currently managed with medication. He is also diagnosed with with atrophy of the muscles and hypotrothy of the third degree, as well as multifocal infantile hemangioma, which may explain why he can only roll around and sit with support. Three years ago, when her picture was first taken for an international adoption file, Emilia's ready smile lit up the room. As she kept waiting for her forever family, with pictures taken year after year, the smile has retreated somewhere deep inside. A hope for a better life and a better future is slowly fading from Emilia's life, and with it any motivation to change herself, to try harder at school, to become as beautiful inside as she is on the outside. Emira and her brother are an epitomy of unwanted children: physically healthy and most likely not suffering from any mental delays, they have probably been labeled as 'hopeless' since admission to the orphanage. Even siblings' characteristics issued by orphanage staff are identical, and not flattering: the kids don't care about their appearance or hygiene, have low self-esteem and no motivation to change to the better. When reading between the lines, we can guess both siblings get along well with others and enjoy sports. They want to be adopted, but more importantly - they want to be seen as individuals, each with their own personality, worthy of someone's love. May you be the one to break the wall of indifference surrounding them?

A close-knit sibling group of four kids is waiting for their forever family! Born to parents who are both mute and deaf, all four kids have moderate to severe hearing loss and resulting delays in speech and development. Unfortunately, they only received medical evaluation and hearing aids last year. These children need someone to teach them sign language, to help them catch up their peers, and to seek more treatment and therapies to mitigate their hearing loss. Her artwork, though simple in execution, is both delicate and powerful in its imagery - she personified the flowers she drew in order to express her mood. The new foster home she has been transferred to last year has given Amira an opportunity to grow emotionally and better express her emotions. She also learned more about family life - doing chores, cooking, taking care of herself and others, etc. Amira works hard at school and hopes to become a preschool teacher when she grows up. Alton is a sweet boy, physically healthy and with no known behavior problems. He enjoys listening to music and dancing. Cognitively, he is far behind and is diagnosed with moderate mental delay. While he completes all given school tasks diligently, developmentally he is more on preschool level. Alton has crossed eyes and wears glasses to correct his astigmatism. We hope Alton and his 6-year old brother capture someone's heart! Here is what our representative shared after meeting him: Alton and his brother have very vivid mimics and are extremely expressive. The staff understands them almost entirely by knowing their behavior and the way they communicate non-verbally. The boys have mastered all the self-service skills and both are very independent. Alton goes to an auxiliary school. He have sessions with speech therapist two times a week. The staff at the Center is somewhat concerned that Alton has difficulties reproducing things and skills he has previously learned or memorized. He does, despite of that, show progress compared to the time he was transferred into this foster home. The social worker describes him as observant, contemplative and attentive. He has a very artistic personality and enjoys arts and crafts activities very much. Emotionally he is a calm and balanced child. Alton is patient and is able to focus and to keep his attention on a certain task long enough to complete it. He is not withdrawn and is very sociable, does not express shyness or any awkwardness while interacting with non familiar adults. Despite the coefficient of intelligence he has as a score of the tests (40) this boy has natural intelligence that is difficult to be described in words, but one can feel almost immediately after meeting him and spending a short amount of time with him.

Almost ten years ago, two healthy twin boys were placed in an orphanage. Thousands of families in their home country were waiting to adopt healthy babies, yet nobody chose these two kids, most likely because of their ethnicity and Muslim names. The two brothers didn't get a break at the orphanage, either. Although physically healthy, sociable, and cute, the two kids received little stimulation or encouragement and as a result have some attention deficit issues and emotional and educational delays. He loves to play games with the children. He is happy to meet new people. He makes appropriate attachments to the caregivers in his home. He isn’t described as a leader. Sometimes, he admits, he feels frustrated that his friends can’t understand what he’s saying because of his speech impediment. Kade is currently living in a mental institution but is doing very well. He is attending school in the local village. His gross and fine motor skills are well developed. He colors inside the lines, feeds and dresses himself and is toilet trained. His expressive and receptive language is developed. He answers to his name, follows directions and repeats the names of objects. He participates in games and seeks out contact with other children. He enjoys playing with stuffed animals, musical toys and mechanical toys. His play is appropriate. He is impulsive and will get upset if he doesn’t get his way. However, he is not aggressive toward himself nor toward other people. He has a short attention span and will often give up easily when an activity is too hard and ask to do something else instead. Kade is described as calm, inquisitive, headstrong, sensitive and communicative. Update from Feb 2013: Kade is toilet trained, feeds and dresses himself, says some words, follows directions, and is not aggressive. He attends special education classes taught by teachers who come to the institution for instructional time. He is active and enjoys playing outside and staying busy. He enjoys the attention from the staff and will act silly to get them to pay attention to him. We have several current photos and a video of him. In the video, he is playing on playground equipment, following directions, joking around with staff and making funny faces at the camera and you can hear him say a few words too. Though healthy otherwise, her developmental and neurological delays are comparatively severe, requiring extensive therapy, and most importantly, stimulation and love.

Girl
Age: 11
This girl with large soulful eyes is diagnosed with moderate mental delays and speech delays. Her gross motor development is excellent and fine motor skills are still developing. At one point local doctors suspected autism, but diagnosis was never confirmed and at this point it is impossible to say whether this pumpkin is truly autistic or just severely delayed. Her caretakers reject the diagnosis as they say the girl is affectionate with her favorite caretakers and interacts, though somewhat limited, with other kids. It was most sad to see her picture at a younger age with a bright and shiny smile - and compare it to a recent photo, looking somber and aloof. So much time already wasted - we can only hope this angel won't have to wait too long for a family.

Girl
Age: 12
This is a beautiful girl with dark brown hair, olive skin, and captivating brown eyes. She has moderate cognitive delays due to the Infantile Cerebral Palsy. Her type is moderate spastic quadraparesis, expressed in her lower limbs. At birth, she weighed almost 4 pounds and was 17 inches long. Now, at 8 years old, she weighs around 45 pounds and is 38.5 inches tall. Although she will have many challenges in life, this pumpkin is a joy to her caregivers. She looks to them for comfort and reassurance throughout the day. She turns when she hears her name called, and often smiles and laughs. Although she doesn’t speak at this time, she does express her needs through grunts and cries. She has been standing since she was 2 years old, and recently started walking! She needs some help getting balanced into a standing position, but once she’s standing, watch out world! This little girl is on the go! In her home country she will continue to receive the best care available, but officials there agree that the best thing for her would be a permanent family. In an adoptive family she could reach her full potential. She could catch up on vital growth and development. Most importantly, she would receive the individual love and attention that each child deserves.

Boy
Age: 10
All too often a child born from unwanted pregnancy with relatively minor physical special needs gets stuck in a system and with no needed stimulation lags behind in emotional and mental development. One such boy needs another chance, a lot of personal attention, patience, speech and occupational therapies, and of course, a lot of love.

Boy
Age: 8
This little boy has been diagnosed with Von Williebrand disease and as a result is also anemic from the bleeding episodes. He is also reported to be very hyperactive and he’s currently being given medication to help calm him down so that he can focus better. The hope is that this will also reduce some of the bleeding episodes. His development is delayed, though he’s recently started making more developmental progress just to a change in his current environment. He walks and tries to run. He eats from a spoon. He is beginning to babble and make sounds. He plays in the children’s play room and enjoys going on walks with caregivers.

Boy
Age: 8
This sweet and affectionate boy with Down Syndrome is fascinated by the outside world - he can sit on the balcony for as long as he's allowed to observe everything going on. At the same time, Nigel is a very energetic child who likes to move around (walking with some support, crawling, etc.) and explore things that catch his attention. Sadly, his caretakers are limited in both numbers and training to help him realize his full potential, but we hope a family finds him soon and gives him a chance! Please note that child's name has been changed and birth date listed above could have been modified by up to 6 months to protect child's privacy according to his or her country laws. Please contact Nancy Barlow at nancy@aboutachild.org for more information.

Girl
Age: 7
This girl who recently turned two years old is completely unwanted in her home country because of the myriad of diagnosis - blindness, microcephaly, infantile cerebral palsy, spasticity associated with increased muscle tone, exhibited hyperkinetik syndrome> (ADHD), symptomatic epilepsy and general global delays. Since she is so young, however, we hope early intervention might help her overcome at least some of these setbacks if she can only find a family to focus on her needs!

Boy
Age: 15
A wonderful older boy is waiting for a family. He currently resides in foster care, and while his foster mother is not in a position to adopt him, she said she'll gladly prepare him for the arrival of a forever family. The boy is attending regular school and does well in all subjects except, occasionally, math - and so gets some help from the tutor for that. He is described as polite and friendly, and sometimes acts as a pacemaker among peers. He dreams of having a family and living on a farm with lots of animals.

Girl
Age: 6
This little girl was born with Apert syndrome and syndactyly (fused fingers). When she turned a year old, her parents made the most difficult decision to release her for adoption so that she could get appropriate medical care they cannot provide. She is described as quiet, observant, and interested in toys and surroundings. We hope for a special family to step forward and offer her love, support and medical care she needs.

Boy
Age: 7
This five-year old boy is physically healthy and fit - he loves swimming, riding his bike and jumping on trampoline. His foster family also describes him as a smart kid who understands the rules, and typically chooses to follow them with occasional incidents of stubbornness. He was bitten by a dog when he was two (only a small scar remains), and while psychologists don't believe it has resulted in fear of dogs, Calvin maintains a love-hate relationships with dogs (foster family's St. Bernard has a place of his own in Calvin's heart, though). Calvin has no mental delays but is behind in many areas. His social worker believes Calvin would be able to bond and attach to his adoptive family, but adoptive parents would need to be need to show patience and understanding and let him enjoy a childhood that was taken away from him.

Girl
Age: 15
Despite her blond hair and beautiful gray eyes, this girl was overlooked for so long. According to limited available information, she was born with cleft lip and palate (corrected) and arthrogryposis of her hands. Her updated description in the national database describes her as diligent, hardworking, focused, and friendly to other kids. Four years ago she was transferred to an orphanage for older kids and we lost track of her, though she is still listed on the waiting kids list, so we hope someone gives her a chance. Unfortunately, at this time this girl can only be adopted by non-U.S. family.

Boy
Age: 12
This boy is suffering from a relatively minor form of cerebral palsy, affecting his legs. He can move around with a walker, and doctors hope with enough therapy he can learn to walk on his own. His sunny personality has won him adoration of the orphanage staff, and we hope someone falls in love with him, too. Unfortunately, at this time this boy can only be adopted by non-U.S. family.

Girl
Age: 10
This little girl was born with a spinal hernia affecting movement of the lower part of her body. The hernia has been successfully removed, and she can now stand, even walk a bit with support. She still needs a lot of therapy and orthopedic shoes. Her orphanage doesn't want to spend any money to get them and is even considering discontinuing massage therapy, since they see 'no point' in doing it - she will soon be transferred to the institution anyway. The girl is developing more or less on target otherwise and caretakers describe her as sweet, please don't let her linger away at an institution! Unfortunately, at this point she can only be adopted by a non-U.S. family.
